Visiting days depend on their housing unit

Each housing floor is assigned one specific day of the week for social visiting (for example Sunday for 5-North, Monday for the 6th Floor). Ask the inmate's correctional counselor which day applies to their floor.

Before you book anything, ask your loved one which day and time they're assigned — by phone, email or letter — and confirm it with the facility. The calendar shows every possible visiting day at this facility, not necessarily theirs.

Rotation: MDC Los Angeles is a pretrial/holdover detention center. Each housing floor is assigned ONE specific day of the week for social visiting (Sun=5 North, Mon=6N/6S, Tue=7 South, Wed=9 South/5 South, Thu=7 North/SHU, Fri=8 South Annex/9 North); 5-North also visits Saturday. Ask the inmate's correctional counselor which day applies. On federal holidays, visiting hours are 8:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. regardless of the assigned day.

Visiting can be cancelled for lockdowns, weather or count problems. Call the facility the day before you travel.

Dress code

  • No tan or khaki clothing of any kind (resembles inmate uniform)
  • No shorts, sweatpants, sweatsuits, leotards, or stretch pants
  • No see-through, mesh, or bare-back clothing; no midriff/crop tops
  • No plunging necklines, low-cut blouses, halter tops, or tube tops
  • No hats, caps, hoods, or scarves
  • No solid white, green, or grey T-shirts
  • Skirts and dresses no more than 1 inch above the knee; no miniskirts or sundresses

You may bring

  • Valid photo ID for visitors 16 and older (driver's license, state ID, military ID, passport, or U.S. immigration ID)
  • One diaper, one pacifier, one baby blanket, and one clear bottle per infant
  • Proof of relationship to the inmate, if requested during list approval

Not allowed

  • Cell phones, cameras, or recording devices
  • Food or beverages in the lobby or front area of the institution
  • Any item or gift passed to or received from the inmate
  • Matricula consular ID cards issued by the Mexican Consulate (not accepted for entry)
  • Weapons, drugs, or other contraband

Good to know

ID requirements
Visitors 16 and older must present and temporarily surrender a valid driver's license, state ID card, military ID, passport, or U.S. immigration ID at the Visiting Room Officer's desk; it is returned when the visit ends. Matricula consular cards from the Mexican Consulate are not accepted. All visitors pass through a metal detector and may be subject to an ion-scan drug test.
Children
Children under 16 are not required to show ID, but the accompanying adult visitor is responsible for supervising them at all times. Visitors with an infant may bring one diaper, one pacifier, one blanket, and one clear bottle.
Vending machines
The handbook does not mention vending machines in the visiting room.

  • Only a closed-mouth kiss is allowed when greeting or leaving; do not move chairs or tables
