Visiting days depend on your loved one

Visits are by housing unit on a fixed weekly day (e.g. Unit 5A visits Monday, 6B visits Tuesday), and which weekend day/shift a unit gets alternates monthly. All visits must be pre-scheduled into a specific hour block through the inmate's Unit Team - you can't just show up.

Before you book anything, ask your loved one which day and time they're assigned — by phone, email or letter — and confirm it with the facility. The calendar shows every possible visiting day at this facility, not necessarily theirs.

Rotation: Social visiting is by housing unit, not open to everyone every day. Each unit has one fixed weekday: Unit 5A visits Monday, 6B on Tuesday, 4A on Wednesday, 4B on Thursday (all 7:00 AM-6:00 PM). Friday has no routine social visiting (only used if a unit's regular day falls on a federal holiday, or if another unit is opened). On weekends, Units 5A/4A share Saturday and 6B/4B share Sunday, but WHICH of those two units gets Saturday vs. Sunday, and which gets the weekday evening vs. morning slot, alternates monthly: 4A and 6B get Sunday/Saturday respectively (and Wednesday/Tuesday) in Jan/Mar/May/Jul/Sep/Nov, while 4B and 5A swap to the other weekend day (and Monday/Thursday) in Feb/Apr/Jun/Aug/Oct/Dec - see the source handbook's table for the exact monthly pairing. Within a unit's assigned day, visits are booked into one of five 1-hour blocks: 7:00-8:00, 8:30-9:30, 11:00-12:00, 2:30-3:30, and 5:00-6:00. Inmates must request a block from their Unit Team in advance; ask your inmate which unit they are housed in and which day/block that gives you.

Visiting can be cancelled for lockdowns, weather or count problems. Call the facility the day before you travel.

Dress code

  • No shorts (except children under 12), miniskirts, or skirts/dresses shorter than the back of the knee
  • No spandex, see-through, backless, sleeveless, or midriff-baring clothing
  • No tube tops, tank tops, swimsuits, or sweat suits
  • No clothing colored/styled like inmate uniforms (khaki or green)
  • No hats or scarves (religious headgear is allowed)
  • Closed-toe shoes required - no flip-flops or slippers
  • Undergarments must be worn by all visitors

You may bring

  • Valid, current state or federal photo ID (driver's license or passport) for every visitor 18+
  • For infants: two diapers, one pacifier, one sealed bottle with contents, and one blanket (must be inspected)
  • Legal documents related to your case, if this is a legal visit

Not allowed

  • Cell phones, cameras, or photography of any kind
  • Food, gum, candy, or drinks brought from outside
  • Gifts, packages, toys, games, needlework, or baby strollers
  • Large/oversized bags, purses, or suitcases (use the lobby lockers or your car)
  • Tobacco products, lighters, or matches
  • Money to give the inmate

Good to know

ID requirements
Every visitor over 18 must present a valid, current state or federal photo ID (driver's license and/or passport), which staff may scan for authenticity; altered or false ID means denied entry.
Children
Children of any age count as one visitor toward the 3-person limit and must be supervised by the accompanying adult at all times; visits are terminated if a child needs care such as a diaper change or feeding. Children over 16 need their own government-issued photo ID; there is no in/out privilege to step out with a child.
Vending machines
As of this handbook, vending machines in the visiting room are off-limits; no outside food or drinks may be brought in either.
Money you may bring
Visitors may not carry money into the visiting room and cannot hand money to an inmate there; all funds for an inmate's account must be mailed to the BOP Lockbox (P.O. Box 474701, Des Moines, IA 50947-0001).
  • Ask your inmate which housing unit they're in - that determines your visiting day, not a fixed weekly schedule
  • Visitors are not processed before 6:30 AM or after 5:00 PM (Friday evening processing starts at 2:30 PM when used)
  • This handbook still references COVID-era rules (face coverings, non-contact/plastic-shield visits) from 2022 - call ahead to confirm current practice
  • Legal visits run Mon-Fri 8:00 AM-2:00 PM only, separate from the social-visit rotation
  • The visiting room fills up fast; if it's too crowded, the earliest arrivals are the first ones cut off
