Rotation: Special Housing Unit (SHU) visits follow the same days/hours as general visiting but are first-come, first-served and limited to one hour. Visits are non-contact, conducted by live video monitor in the visiting room's video visiting area.

Visiting can be cancelled for lockdowns, weather or count problems. Call the facility the day before you travel.

Dress code

  • No sleeveless shirts, halter, tank, or tube tops
  • No plunging necklines, see-through, or spandex/form-fitting clothing
  • No clothing with holes, camouflage, or khaki-colored clothing (matches inmate uniform)
  • No hats, caps, or hooded shirts
  • No shorts, coats, jackets, gloves, or scarves
  • Dresses/skirts must reach the knee when seated; no rolled-up cuffs or hems
  • No open-toed shoes, flip-flops/shower shoes, or heels over 3 inches
  • No watches of any type

You may bring

  • Valid state or federal government-issued photo ID (driver's license, passport, state ID, or military ID)
  • Jewelry normally worn
  • 2 baby bottles with dry formula in a clear container (no liquids), and sealed baby food in clear containers
  • Diapers, baby wipes, 2 sets of children's clothes, and/or a blanket no larger than 40"x40"
  • Heart medication/inhalers and feminine hygiene products, only the amount needed for the visit, in a clear bag

Not allowed

  • Cell phones, pagers, handbags, cameras, and recording devices
  • Food of any kind, photos, papers, or newspaper clippings
  • Money, watches, and outdoor apparel (coats, jackets, gloves, scarves)
  • Shorts, flip-flops, shower shoes, or open-toed shoes/heels over 3 inches
  • Gifts, packages, or clothing brought for the inmate

Good to know

ID requirements
All visitors, except children under 16, must show a valid state or federal government-issued photo ID (e.g., driver's license, passport, state ID card, or military ID) to the Lobby Officer before entry.
Children
Children under 16 must be accompanied and supervised by a responsible adult (or approved children's program); staff/inmates are responsible for children's behavior. A parent or guardian must sign the Visitor Information Form (BP-629) for visitor applicants under 18.
Vending machines
A vending machine area exists in the visiting room, but inmates may not accompany visitors there. The document lists money as an item that is NOT permitted in the visiting room, and does not explain how vending purchases are paid for.
  • Arrive before 9:15 a.m. or after 11:00 a.m.; visitors are not processed in between
  • Processing of new visitors into the visiting room stops at 2:00 p.m.
  • Designated visitor parking is on the east side of the main parking lot
  • There is no commercial transportation to the facility; nearest major airport is Dane County Regional in Madison
